Adela followed the sharp crack of wood striking wood and found Lachlan in the training yard. He was wearing nothing but a pair of breeches and boots and was sparring. She watched the sweat glisten on his toned body, the way his corded muscles flexed beneath his skin as he moved. He moved in on his sparring partner, cutting and hacking with a scowl on his face.
The man he was sparring with kept backing up, losing ground to the unrelenting flurry of blows Lachlan was raining down on him.
“Yield! Yield!” the man yelled.
Heedless of the man’s words, Lachlan kept hacking. He let out a roar that seemed to shake the walls of the training yard around him. Overhand hack after overhand hack, Lachlan drove his partner to his knees. It seemed all the man could do to keep his practice blade up, warding off the blows.
“Lachlan,” Adela called.
She rushed across the yard, calling his name but it was only when she put her hand on his arm, that he seemed to snap out of whatever violent trance he’d been trapped in. Lachlan gave his head a small shake as his eyes focused on her. He cut a glance at the man on his knees and a sheepish expression crossed his face.
“I’m sorry, lad. I lost me head for a minute,” Lachlan said as he took a step back. “I didnae mean to take it out on ye like that.”
The man stood up, his legs shaking, his breathing ragged. He gave Lachlan a watery smile before giving him a slight bow and rushing off. Adela reached out and gently took the practice sword from his hand and laid her other hand on his arm.
“Are you alright?” she asked.
“Aye. I’m fine,” he replied.
“You do not look fine.”
Adela took his hand and led him over to a bench that stood beneath a tree and forced him to sit down next to her. She laid the wooden sword across her lap and looked at him. They sat in silence for a couple of moments and Adela could see the emotion churning behind Lachlan’s eyes.
“You looked like you could have killed that man just now,” she said.
“Aye. But I didnae, did I?”
“No, not this time,” she agreed. “But I can see you’re upset about something. Talk to me, Lachlan.”
He let out a long sigh. “Donald fin’lly came back,” he said. “Brought Calum with ‘im. Calum’s in a bad way.”
The way he said it and the tense set of his body told Adela the news Donald brought back with him was not good. He radiated anger from every pore. It was so intense, it scared Adela. More than that, it made her heart hurt for Lachlan. She could see how upset he was and wanted nothing more than to ease his pain the way he so often did for her. But she did not know how.
“And your other friend - Aidan was it?”
Lachlan’s jaw clenched and his eyes narrowed. Adela could see the pain and anger etched deeply into his features.
